Materials & Care

At Johari Jewellery, we’ve committed to the best of modern jewellery making techniques and rare metals into each of our African inspired jewellery pieces.

Allowing you to enjoy long wear out of your pieces. So here’s what we use.

18k Gold Vermeil

Pioneered by British Jewellery Brand Monica Vinader, Vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is a modern plating technique that allows to make affordable long-lasting gold jewellery.

How does it work? Well first of all, you start with a high-quality sterling silver piece and then you layer it generously with gold. Vermeil gold plating is 5x thicker than regular plating making it much more durable.

Vermeil plating is regulated here in the UK (where we’re based!) and requires us to layer at least 2.5microns (technical term for the thickness of plating), making it one of the highest standards in the world.

Sterling Silver

We use the most durable and most popular used form of silver, called 925 Sterling Silver. It is an alloy made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. The blend of silver and copper allows the metal to be corrosion free and resistant to physical friction.

It's also the material of choice by your favourite and best know jewellery brands (think of the brand that rimes with Panda). So we just had to have it too.

Rhodium

For the extra touch of shine + durability we plate our silver jewellery in rhodium.

Never heard of Rhodium before? Believe it or not it is actually more valuable than gold, making it one of the costliest precious metals due to its rarity. It can be up to 25 times more expensive than gold, making it a truly fine metal.

More commonly found on most white gold or silver engagement rings, rhodium plating gives one of the shiniest and most durable finishes. We use rhodium to avoid your sterling silver jewellery loosing its shine overtime (which tends to happen).
